Last fall Keri & Kirk came down from Chicago so we could shoot their engagement photos at the Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis. It had been several years since Sam & I were there last and I had forgotten just how lovely it is. The fact that the guards let us stay and shoot for an hour and half after closing certainly added to the intimacy of the final images. Tomorrow Sam and I are photographing Keri & Kirk’s wedding at one of our favorite venues, Chandler Hill Vineyards in Defiance. It promises to be a very good day.
I’ve been spending a lot of time this winter designing and building wedding albums. I really love the time spent building these not just because it is a welcome break from computer work but it is such a different type of work. Whether it is tearing and scoring 100+ album pages, building hinged covers, or the hundreds of other small detailed steps in constructing one of our heirloom albums, I find the process of building beautiful things by hand immensely fulfilling. More important than my own personal satisfaction in building our albums is the gratification that comes from making something beautiful for someone else. Of all the albums I made last year this fall-themed Heirloom Wedding Album that we made for Ty and Amanda is one of my favorites. It is large, 12×15 inches, and substantial with over 100 pages of heavy archival rag paper. As in all of our Heirloom Albums, we feature several of the most dramatic photographs as gatefold spreads. My favorite part though is the cover with the gold-filled rip running across the lower section. There is a Japanese pottery tradition called Kintsukuroi that uses gold to repair broken ceramics as a way of drawing attention to the breaks and acknowledging that the piece is more beautiful for having been broken. It … Read More About: Handmade Heirloom Wedding Album
James and Rachel’s wedding at Innsbrook Resort had everything that we love about weddings, loving families, committed friends, a real understanding of the meaning of marriage, and lots and lots of joy. For us, photographing a wedding is about capturing that joy and translating it into a visual story that can be shared and treasured. If at the end of the evening we have beautiful photos of the bride, groom, venue and details but didn’t capture the joy, then we have failed. There was no possibility of that happening at James and Rachel’s wedding. They are both so full of joy and love that it radiates … Read More About: Innsbrook, Missouri Lakeside Summer Wedding | James & Rachel
Earlier this summer Meagan and Zach drove from St. Louis to Columbia so we could meet and shoot their engagement session. After a beautiful evening of walking, talking and photographing we spent a couple of hours around our backyard campfire drinking wine and telling stories. We are pretty excited to get to hang out with them again when we shoot their wedding this weekend at the fantastic Chandler Hill Vineyards. It’s going to be a blast.
Earlier this summer we had a chance to hang out and shoot some engagement photographs with Caleb and Kelsie at Strawberry Hill Nursery and Rock Bridge State Park. We are excited for this weekend when we get to document all the beauty, emotion and fun of their wedding day. ~Scott & Sam

In March, Sam and I went for a walk with Colin and Jessica at Rock Bridge State Park. They told us some of their stories and we told them some of ours. It was one of those days when you can tell that winter is over but spring hasn’t started yet. It was beautiful. Here are some of the photos I made during our time together. Colin and Jessica are getting married in a couple of days and we are honored to be a part of it.
Last fall I took John and Sarah on a walk in the woods behind our house. Here are a few of the photos we made. They’re getting married this weekend and Sam and I will be there covering the whole thing. If it’s half as much fun as our walk, then it promises to be a great weekend.
It’s a photographic truism that bad weather often makes for the best photos. When Sam and I met up with M.E. and Reed a couple days before last Christmas to shoot their engagement photos, everything at Rockbridge State Park was covered in a thick layer of ice from one of last winter’s many storms. It was very precarious but they never let go of each other and kept each other from falling. They’ll have the rest of their lives to continue that after they get married tomorrow.
Saying no when someone really wants us to photograph their wedding is always hard but having to say it to Tara was the worst. Sam and Tara have been friends since childhood so when she called Sam to let her know that not only was she getting married but that she was going to come back to Columbia from Brooklyn to do so, we were all very happy. But when she told us her date was the first weekend in May, a day that we had booked over a year ago, we were all a little bummed. Not only were we not going to shoot … Read More About: Tara’s DIY Wedding Flowers
Great couple, lovely families and friends, amazing flowers, perfect weather and a really super new venue, Ryan and Becky’s wedding had everything.
Of all the handmade wedding albums I’ve built over the last couple of years this is definitely one of my favorites. Not only was Brock and Natalie’s wedding at Chandler Hill Vineyards absolutely beautiful it was also one of those days when everything just falls into place and works. It was raining off and on all day and it looked like things might have to be moved inside. At the last minute though the clouds moved away and we had one of the most spectacular sunsets I’ve ever seen at a wedding. For their Artisan Album we used a cream-colored lokta paper that matched Natalie’s dress for … Read More About: Handmade Album for a Winery Wedding
Whenever we have the opportunity we love shooting multiple engagement sessions in different seasons. Tom and Stephanie wanted a lot of variety in their photos so we spent a summer evening walking around the University of Missouri Campus and then headed downtown for a rooftop drink. For their fall session we took a little hike on our favorite trail to get some fall color and ended up getting rained on while the sun was shining–it was kind of special. They’re getting married this weekend and Sam and I are really excited to be part of it.
This is a handmade wedding album we recently finished for Robyn & Trevan who got married last summer in Springfield, Missouri. Their Artisan Album is a great example of how we incorporate the general color palette of a wedding into the album design. In this case we used gray and dark purple lokta paper from Nepal on the cover. The gray was inspired by Trevan’s suit and the dark purple accent mirrored the flowers, bridesmaids’ dresses and wedding details. The end sheets are a thin Japanese lace paper backed with a sturdy colored paper that creates wonderful depth and texture as you open and close the … Read More About: Handmade Wedding Album | Trevan & Robyn’s Springfield, Missouri Wedding
Here are a few of the photos we shot last year for Ryan and Becky’s wedding guest book. Tomorrow is their big day and Samantha and I will be there documenting the whole thing. Thank You. SPM
These two are getting married today in Ashland, Missouri. It’s going to be fun. spm
Clint and Emily are getting married in a couple of days. Here are a few from their engagement shoot we did last April.
I understand that five post from one wedding might be a little excessive, but Greg & Andrea’s wedding was so much fun it couldn’t fit into one post. Their wedding photos wouldn’t fit into a regular album either so we made this for them. It’s a 12×15 inch version of our Big Artisan album. With 100 pages, including several gatefold spreads, there is enough space to include all their favorites in a layout that lets the images stand on their own. The cover uses handmade lokta paper from Nepal and a variation of a traditional Japanese hemp leaf stab binding. … Read More About: Heirloom Wedding Album | Greg & Andrea
